Founded 1958

Launch

Gammelbro Camping was founded by Jenny and Claus Knudsen in 1958. The site opened on 1 May 1958 with space for 50 tents. At the same time, 11 hectares of land were leased for orchards.

The first 3 years the toilets were buckets, emptied into the slurry tank and driven to the field in winter. The first shop was an ice cream parlour in the yard of the old property, Gammelbrovej 80.

1961 - 1975

Growth

In 1961 a toilet building with a toilet was built - the present beach toilet. Camping became popular and the site soon expanded to around 200 units. In 1965 the old stable was converted into a new shop after repeated expansions of the ice-cream parlour.

A preservation order in 1969 determined that the site should be moved away from the beach area and later moved even further away from the beach when the lease with the orchard expired. In 1971 the site was drained. The site was connected and at the same time received water supply from Årøsund waterworks. In the same year Årøsund Camping opened on the neighbouring property.

1976 - 1986

2nd generation

On Jan. 1, 1976, Johannes Knudsen took over the management of the place from his parents. Leasehold of the 11ha of land had ceased and a gradual reclamation and expansion of the site began. A long period of gradual expansion and construction of new service buildings followed.

Around 1985, the site was expanded to 600 units.

In 1986, a new reception and shop building was opened at a new access to the site.

1993 - 2005

Largest campsite in Denmark

Camping was developing and more and better facilities were needed. From 1993 to 2003, 3 new toilet blocks, a play hall, a cafeteria and a swimming pool were built.

In 2005 Gammelbro Camping bought the neighbouring property Årøsund Camping. The merger of the two sites made the site the site with the most permitted units in Denmark.

2014 - 2022

3rd generation

On Jan. 1, 2014, Jacob Knudsen joined the operation of the site with 1/3 ownership. Inga and Johannes Knudsen with 2/3. The Knudsen family would like to thank the many loyal campers who have helped shape life on the site over the years, and welcome newcomers to the environment the site has to offer.
